Each of her grandfather's wives has a round hut. The big boys have their own round hut while the big girls sleep in another hut. The other two huts are for visiting family members. At the end of the compound is a smaller-sized rectangular house for Ego's uncle. it has a room and a small sitting-room. At the othe end of the compound is the cooking area. The six huts are mainly for sleeping.

In the middle of the compound is a long, open space  In the center of the open space is a four-sided shed. The mud walls of the shed are only half way up.
There is a raised mud stage inside for sitting. The shed is the resting place for all the children during the day. Sometimes, Ego and the other children make a fire in the shed, and they roast corn, groundnuts or small yams. Ego enjoys all the games and stories in the shed.
Ego sleeps in her grandmother's hut most of the time. But at times, she and her cousin sleep in grandfather's sitting-room. She enjoys going to the farm.
Sometimes, they go to the stream to fetch water in pots and gourds. The women in the compound take turns to cook the family meals. Ego's uncle does most of the work. the young children eat in the grandfather's big sitting-room. The sitting-room is also used for family meetings.
